Director General of International Sweeteners Association, AGI Representative call on GSA DG

As part of the Association of Ghana Industries’ (AGI) ongoing engagement with key stakeholders on Ghana’s evolving food and nutrition policy landscape, the Director-General (DG) of International Sweeteners Association and Mr. Theophilus Arthur-Mensah, Policy and Research Manager at AGI, on Friday, September 4, 2026, met with the Director-General of the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA), Prof. George Agyei, to gain a deeper understanding of the evolving food quality and standards policy environment. The meeting also sought to explore how the two institutions could collaborate in support of public health objectives, while fostering responsible innovation, investment, competitiveness and sustainable economic growth. Mr. Oger expressed his gratitude and excitement at meeting Prof. Agyei and explained the role his association plays in the food value chain and how they seek to educate consumers on the health benefits of sweeteners. Prof. Agyei, on his part, noted that he was personally happy about the conversation and advised that they raise more awareness of the product and its benefits, adding that it will help inform consumers to guide their health. He assured them GSA is willing to take on new ideas and innovation in standardisation, especially in the food and drugs space, although the regulation of sweeteners does not fall directly in the Authority’s mandate. “As a standards institution we give people the platform to set the standards and collaborate with various regulators to ensure that they are being met. I can assure that we will collaborate with you and bring our other agencies on board to ensure that our citizens have as much information as possible to guide their lifestyle.” Prof. Agyei added. Madam Dzienyo A. Akafia, Head of Product Certification, who was also present at the discussion, also stated that GSA is in a position to certify such products and her department will be willing to collaborate with ISA to improve the sweeteners sector.
