The Ban on Used Vehicles Has Been Implemented in Several Countries Worldwide – GSA

The Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) has moved to justify the National Vehicle Homologation and Conformity Assessment Programme stating that the initiative seeks to protect consumers from sub-standard, unsafe, and environmentally damaging vehicles while fostering a cleaner, safer, and better-regulated automotive industry and is encouraging all industry stakeholders to familiarise themselves with the applicable requirements. Speaking during a media interview on Joynews last week, Mr. Kofi Yeboah Debrah, and Mr. Prentice Macmillan, the Acting Head of PR and Head of Vehicle Homologation Unit at the GSA, respectively, noted that the enforcement programme is being held in consultation with the automotive industry stakeholders and it is not seeking to prevent people from importing vehicles but want to ensure that the automotive industry develops. “This initiative has been going on internationally, with a lot of our neighbouring countries instituting lesser year bans than Ghana. These bans exist to protect citizens from unsafe and sub-standard vehicles to improve the automotive industry in the country,” Mr. Debrah stated during the media interview. They further called on the public to support the Authority to execute its mandate of protecting consumers and facilitating trade.
