The Director-General (DG) of the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA), Prof. George Agyei, together with senior officials of the Authority, on Thursday, June 4, 2026, met with members of the Steel Manufacturers Association of Ghana (SMAG) at the GSA Head Office in Accra. The meeting was held to discuss the compliance period for the implementation of the marking requirements for steel reinforcement bars used in concrete construction, as well as to address challenges facing the steel manufacturing sector. The discussions formed part of ongoing efforts to enhance public safety, improve product quality, and ensure the traceability of steel products on the Ghanaian market. The eight-member SMAG delegation was led by the association’s secretary, Mr. Sandeep Aroza. In his remarks, Prof. Agyei reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to protecting consumers while creating an enabling environment for businesses to thrive through adherence to standards. He noted that standards play a critical role in driving economic growth by empowering producers to deliver quality products and services within a structured and competitive business environment. “Standard compliance is not merely a regulatory obligation; it is a strategic competitive advantage. When we lose focus on standards, we risk compromising the sustainability and growth of our industries,” he stated. Prof. Agyei expressed appreciation to the delegation for engaging with the Authority and encouraged continued collaboration between the association and the GSA to promote compliance, strengthen the steel industry, and safeguard the interests of consumers.
